A Hmong-Inspired Christmas

Gaochen and I are Hmong-American, born and raised here in the United States. Our parents arrived in the US in 1979 and were among the first wave of Hmong refugees to establish a new life in a new world. By the late 1980’s, my parents had successfully settled down in MN.

We grew up learning Hmong as our first language and adhering to Hmong traditions. But as we entered grade school, we were confronted with not only a foreign language but with customs we were not aware of. These customs included celebrating holidays that we had no cultural reference to, holidays that were not known or acknowledged in our parent’s country of birth. Eventually we adapted of few of these customs into our home and have since then, become an important part of our cross-cultural experiences.

As a nod to our heritage, our culture, and the celebration of Christmas – my sister and I have proposed a project that intertwines Hmong characteristics with the traditional American Christmas holiday. Like those who have family ornament heirlooms that pass on from generation to generation, we will be putting a little bit of our own family culture into this very merry holiday.

Stay tune for updates, photos, DIY tutorials, and more – as we count down our 12 days of Hmong-Inspired Christmas!
